Cut, Clamp, Conserve with ADVANCE Grass

John Nix 2018, reports forage variable costs per year for an intensive 1-2-year ley at £294 for seed, fertiliser and sprays. This is equivalent to £4.90/t fresh weight of grass at a yield of 50t/ha. Added to this, Nix reports a “complete service” grass conservation contractor cost of £160/hour. These costs alone bring into perspective the topline investment that we make into growing quality forage for our animals.

However, a recent study of 40 dairy farms in the south west with an average herd size of 129, showed less than 30% of units using grass silage additive.* The main objection to using an additive was because of the perceived extra cost however evidence from numerous studies over the years, clearly demonstrates strong return on investment costs of using them. Why then, should a quality additive be considered?

 The key aim with ensiling grass is to remove oxygen and drop pH quickly, enabling lactic acid bacteria to multiply and stabilizing and preserving the grass. Using a quality forage additive can only improve this process and whilst it all happens “under the sheet”, the results are seen time and time again in analysis and at feed-out. Quality additives achieve this with:

  • Lactic acid bacteria. These enable rapid fermentation of sugars into lactic acid, bringing the pH down quickly below pH 5, at which point aerobic spoilage by bacteria is halted.
  • Acetic acid bacteria to retard the growth of moulds and yeasts which are found naturally on grass. This enhances the stability of the silage and directly affects forage quality.
  • Microbial Stimulants – Which are essential to assist the dormant bacteria in the additive, enabling maximum performance to be unlocked.
  • Enzymes to increase digestibility. They accomplish this by separating carbohydrates from lignin in the grass.
